Resident Director: John Harris
John recently joined the team at A Better Chance of New Canaan as the new Resident Director. He has continued the fine efforts of his predecessors – John and Laura Walsh; creating a safe and supportive environment, while also sharing his own relatable personal and professional experiences. In his role as Resident Director, John serves as the house scholars’ guardian during their time in the program; providing the necessary guidance, counsel and discipline to ensure the smooth running of the household. A native of Old Greenwich, CT, John has two college-aged daughters and is a paraprofessional within the New Canaan School District.
Resident Tutor: Michael Powell
Michael Powell is originally from Richmond VA and has taught history in Maryland and Washington, DC for the last 10 years. Michael is currently an upper school history teacher at St. Luke’s School. He has had the privilege to teach students from 4th grade through graduate school, to coach middle and upper school soccer and tennis, and for the last two years serve as Director of Equity and Inclusion and history department chair at an all-girls catholic school in Baltimore. Before teaching, Michael spent a few years as a museum curator and director of exhibitions in Baltimore. He earned his bachelors in history and political science from Virginia Union University and his masters in humanities from Loyola University Maryland.
Cook: Beth Jones
Beth starts her eighth year as cook for the ABC House. She provides nutritious and delicious meals (on a tight budget no less) to the boys and our resident staff. Beth loves to garden and has served
on the town’s Board of Selectman for the past two years.
