Our School

In April 2010, Forbes Magazine and Great Schools, an independent, nonprofit organization, released an analysis of some 17,000 cities and towns nationwide. New Canaan schools earned the No. 3 ranking among schools in the nation’s most affluent communities.

Also in 2010, the New Canaan High School library was awarded the National School Library Program of the Year Award, given by the American Library Association. The ALA cited, among many attributes, that the New Canaan High School library created "a learning environment equipped with the tools and resources to make its students 21st century learners.”

In addition to its superior academic program, New Canaan High School also offers an extensive variety of extracurricular activities. Student participation is quite high, and their dedicated efforts have traditionally delivered impressive results. This is as true for the JETS teams (Junior Engineering Technical Society) that win national recognition as the varsity football team, which has won the Connecticut state championship (in its size class) for four consecutive years.

Among other recent accolades, the New Canaan High School drama department won seven awards at the 2010 Connecticut High School Musical Theatre Awards, including the Outstanding Production of the Year for its presentation of The Mystery of Edwin Drood. And on the sporting fields, the athletic program was named the Best in the Conference, an award based on the percentage of the student population that participates in sports, the academic achievement of student athletes, and the record of the school's teams.

The New Canaan community supports the Board of Education in allowing A Better Chance students to attend New Canaan High School free of any tuition charge.

New Canaan Public Schools serve some 4,000 students with a budget of more than $50 million. The district includes three elementary schools, a fifth through eighth grade middle school, and New Canaan High School. The high school student body includes some 1,300 students.

New Canaan’s commitment to educational excellence is well recognized. In November 2009, Connecticut Magazine rated New Canaan High School No. 1 in the state among towns with a population between 15,000 and 25,000.
