Our Community
New Canaan has approximately 20,000 residents. The town benefits from both an active downtown center and a train line that facilitates travel to New York City, just one hour away. Perhaps most importantly, New Canaan offers an engaged community that supports its schools, civic groups and philanthropic organizations with its time, energy and resources.
A Better Chance of New Canaan is a beneficiary of such support. Many individuals in the community join with ABC’s large board of directors in providing friendly support to all aspects of the program.

That includes responsibility for maintaining the house and grounds for A Better Chance of New Canaan, providing academic oversight for the students, offering guidance regarding summer programs, spearheading fundraising for the organization, supporting the college application process, and much more.
Additionally, local businesses offer valuable services, either on an ongoing or as-needed basis. For example, the Bank of New Canaan offers free bank accounts to the students and the New Canaan Y offers free swim lessons. And a local architecture firm recently donated its services to design and oversee a renovation of the house’s study room.
The town’s many charitable organizations also offer an appropriate outlet for A Better Chance students to become involved in philanthropic activity. The students often have pitched in to support the annual Kiwanis Club Pancake Breakfast, the Clean Your Mile activity each spring, and New Canaan High School’s Scholarship Drive, among other events. A Better Chance students have also found it rewarding to participate in mission trips and retreats sponsored by local churches. The New Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corp. also welcomes participation from A Better Chance students who are interested in gaining emergency medical skills.
In short, New Canaan offers a high level of community involvement along with a broad array of diverse opportunities. This leads to unique benefits for A Better Chance of New Canaan students.
