Since its founding in 1973, A Better Chance of New Canaan's mission has been unchanged: to offer capable minority youth the opportunity to learn in a superior educational program that will affirm and nurture their academic talent, while also preparing them to assume positions of responsibility and leadership in American society.
Each year, New Canaan selects promising scholars from the tri-state area to attend New Canaan High School. Students enter the four-year A Better Chance program as high school freshman. During the academic year, the students live in a house owned and maintained by A Better Chance, Inc. of New Canaan. The house accommodates up to eight male students, resident directors and family, and two resident tutors.
On Sundays and for one weekend per month, our students join their local host families. The A Better Chance students are encouraged to become an integral part of the New Canaan community. The students participate in extracurricular activities at New Canaan High School, and many volunteer their time to local charitable organizations.
